OKITIPUPA, ONDO STATE — Contrary to reports suggesting that the 27.5-kilometre Okitipupa–Igbokoda Road dualisation project in Ondo State has been abandoned, a visit to the project site has shown that construction activities are still ongoing.

A Starnews correspondent who visited different sections of the road on Friday, October 2, observed construction workers and heavy-duty equipment operating at various locations, while drainage works were also in progress.

The project is being executed under the administration of Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Although some residents expressed concerns about the pace of construction, observations at the site indicated that work had not stopped, with contractors and workers actively engaged in different aspects of the project.

Residents Raise Concerns Over Pace

Some residents who spoke during the visit acknowledged that construction activities were ongoing but expressed concerns about what they described as the slow pace of work.

They said they were particularly eager to see the project completed because of the importance of the road to transportation, commerce and the movement of people and goods between Okitipupa and Igbokoda.

However, some workers who spoke on condition of anonymity disagreed with the assessment that construction was progressing slowly.

One of the workers explained that the pace of construction could vary depending on the terrain and the technical requirements of different sections of the road.

“It is understandable that some residents may not fully appreciate the technical aspects of the project. The pace of work differs from one location to another, depending on the terrain and the specific construction requirements at each section,” the worker said.

Rainfall Affecting Construction Activities

The Starnews correspondent also observed that persistent rainfall was affecting construction activities in some areas.

Several portions of the road were muddy and slippery, making it difficult for heavy machinery to operate efficiently and slowing down some earthwork activities.

Drainage construction was among the major activities observed during the inspection.

The drainage infrastructure is expected to play an important role in managing stormwater and protecting the road from the damaging effects of flooding and erosion, particularly during the rainy season.

Project Remains Active

The presence of workers, construction machinery and ongoing drainage activities indicates that the Okitipupa–Igbokoda dualisation project remains active.

While rainfall and other site conditions may have affected the pace of work in some locations, observations from the site showed that construction activities were continuing.

The 27.5-kilometre road project is considered important to residents and businesses in the area, with expectations that its completion will improve transportation, trade and connectivity across communities in the region.

Starnews can therefore report, based on its site visit, that the Okitipupa–Igbokoda Road dualisation project has not been abandoned, although concerns remain over the pace of construction and the impact of weather conditions on the project.
