At least 20 people have died in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo–Jos route in Plateau State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
The fatal accident occurred at about 3:32 p.m. on Friday, October 2, shortly after Sopp Water Falls, according to the FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri.
The road safety agency said 25 people were involved in the crash, comprising 23 males and two females. Five people sustained injuries, while all 20 fatalities were male.
Four vehicles were reportedly involved in the collision: a Howo Sino truck, a Toyota Corolla, a Toyota Hummer bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle.
Following the crash, FRSC personnel evacuated the injured victims to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital for medical attention.
The bodies of those who died were subsequently deposited at the mortuary of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
Brake Failure Suspected
The FRSC identified brake failure and loss of control as the suspected causes of the crash, although a detailed investigation is still expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Rescue personnel also cleared the vehicles and debris from the road, restoring traffic flow along the affected section of the highway.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has directed the agency's crash investigation team to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the accident.
He also urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers and operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
The Corps Marshal further advised motorists to exercise caution and adhere to safe-driving practices, particularly when navigating difficult sections of the highway.
The latest tragedy has renewed concerns about road safety along the Hawan Kibo route, where steep bends and descending sections require motorists to maintain appropriate speeds and exercise extra caution.
