A resident pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Aleto, in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Deacon Steve Eyo, has reportedly collapsed and died while preaching at a funeral ceremony.

The incident occurred on Friday during a burial ceremony attended by more than 300 mourners and other guests.

Eyo was reportedly delivering a sermon titled “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond” when he suddenly collapsed while concluding his message.

An eyewitness said the pastor began preaching at about 1:10 p.m., speaking about the inevitability of death and the importance of living a prepared and purposeful life.

According to the eyewitness, Eyo used the example of people going to the market to illustrate how people leave the world at different times. He reportedly explained that while some people leave the market early and others remain longer, death can come at different moments for everyone.

At about 1:25 p.m., as he was concluding the sermon, the pastor suddenly collapsed.

His fall initially caused confusion among some mourners, with some reportedly thinking he was demonstrating the suddenness of death, given the subject of his sermon. However, it quickly became apparent that he was experiencing a medical emergency.

Church ministers, choir members and other attendees reportedly gathered around him and began praying, while individuals with medical knowledge attempted to provide first aid.

He was later rushed to a medical facility in an ambulance that had been hired to transport the remains of the deceased whose funeral ceremony he was attending.

The pastor was reportedly confirmed dead at the hospital, after which his remains were taken to a mortuary.

The eyewitness described the incident as shocking and distressing, particularly because of the subject of the pastor's final sermon.

Eyo had reportedly urged mourners to remember that death is inevitable and that everyone should live responsibly and prepare for what comes after death.

His reported final words were: “Number your days and prepare, for it can happen anytime.”

The incident occurred in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.

As of the time of filing this report, the circumstances surrounding the pastor's sudden death had not been officially disclosed.
