The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that it has commenced a fresh nationwide voter registration exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The commission also warned Nigerians about a fraudulent website circulating online and falsely claiming that a new online voter registration exercise began on September 28 and would run until October 27, 2026.

In a statement issued on Saturday, INEC said the website was not affiliated with the commission and urged members of the public to disregard information published on the platform.

According to the electoral body, its attention was drawn to the fake website after claims emerged online that a fresh nationwide online voter registration exercise had commenced.

INEC cautioned Nigerians against visiting the website, clicking on links provided on the platform or submitting personal information, warning that such details could be collected and potentially misused.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the website below is FAKE and has no affiliation whatsoever with INEC,” the commission stated.

INEC further stated that the voter registration exercise for the current electoral cycle ended on July 26, 2026.

The commission therefore advised eligible voters and the general public to ignore unofficial messages, social media posts and websites claiming that voter registration has reopened.

It urged Nigerians seeking election-related information to rely exclusively on INEC's authorised communication channels.

“INEC urges the public to remain vigilant and to verify all electoral information through the Commission’s official communication channels,” the commission added.

The warning comes as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue across the country.

INEC reiterated that Nigerians should verify election-related information through its official platforms and avoid providing personal details to unverified websites.

The commission's latest warning underscores the importance of vigilance as online platforms increasingly become a major source of election-related information ahead of the 2027 polls.
